Background
History
The name Holtby derives from the Old Norse Holtibȳ meaning 'Holti's village'. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Boltebi in the Bulford hundred in the possession of the King. Holtby was served by Holtby railway station on the York to Beverley Line between 1847 and 1939. The village was historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was then a part of the district of Ryedale in North Yorkshire from 1974 until 1996. Since 1996 it has been part of the City of York unitary authority.
