Details ST13SE COTHELSTONE CP 3/85 Gatehouse, Cothelstone Manor 25.2.55 GV I Gatehouse. Mid C16. Coursed squared red sandstone with white limestone dressings, random rubble plinth and random rubble return elevations, flat roofs, asbestos covered ashlar stacks. Central tower projecting half a storey above flanking wings. 2-storeys, 1:1:1 bays, central crenellated tower with blind round headed niche resting on string course, corbelled out shouldered support to plain frieze, recessed centre, oval eye slits at second floor above 4-centred moulded arch. Wings breaking forward, first floor 4-light mullions of the tripartite baluster type as used in the Manor (qv) itself and throughout the gatehouse, below string course with shell headed niches flanked by glazed openings on ground floor. Inside gateway, arched doorways with round headed niches and incomplete string courses where double doors, missing, were rebated. 2 storey buildings on either side, now without ceilings, have winder stairs in projecting turrets with first floor depressed 4-centred arched fireplaces set in square frames with tablets above and moulded jambs; left-hand one partially decayed. Right-hand block contains single storey rendered partition with 4-centred arch opening. Rear elevation has 3-light mullions in tower and wings. A beguiling and unusual mixture of architectural elements in a building almost unaltered since the C16. (Country Life Jan 11 1908, photographs NMR).
