Details War memorial plaque, unveiled 1920 by Bishop of St Albans, Dr Michael Furse DESCRIPTION: the stone memorial comprises a rectangular tablet, resting on two small brackets, above which is a smaller rectangular tablet supporting a cross with a shallow hood above. The whole memorial is set into the front wall of the dwellings which form 80 and 82 Sopwell Lane*. The larger of the two tablets is inscribed with 15 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War. The inscription reads: ‘FOR REMEMBERANCE/ 1914-1918/JAMES BAKER RALPH HAYLES/ WILLIAM BEASLEY GEORGE HALSEY/ BERT EPHGRAVE CHARLES JAYCLEAU/ JOHN EPHGRAVE BERTRAM PARLES/ CHARLES FOUTAIN PERCY POPE/ HARRY CATELEY NOAH SWAIN/ JESSE CATELEY HERBERT WRIGHT/ WILLIAM WALDOCK/ RIP’. *Pursuant to s.1 (5A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (‘the Act’) it is declared that the dwelling which form 80 and 82 Sopwell Lane are not of special architectural or historic interest. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 12 January 2017.
