Details SOWERBY BRIDGE ROCHDALE CANAL SE 0225-0325 Upper Foot, Luddenden Foot 6/184 Overflow channel and culvert on north-west side of Canal - Bridge GV II Overflow channel and culvert. c1798. For the Rochdale Canal Company. Coursed squared stone. Overflow channel, on north side of canal, curves round to east, joining with beck and directing water from this and the canal into a culvert which runs beneath the canal and into the River Calder. The overflow channel has a stone ledge at the canal side, and walls and base of squared stone. It steps down under the segmental-arched culvert entrance. The culvert exit, on the riverside, has a segmental arch with springers, large voussoirs, and large blocks above a band. The culvert itself is composed of large blocks of stone. The overflow channel and part of the culvert are in the parish of Hebden Royd. For history of canal construction see Sowerby Long Bridge (12/177).
