Details ASHBURTON SX7569 OLD TOTNES ROAD 849-1/7/142 Gulwell Bridge GV II Bridge across River Ashburn. Probably C18 (1775 or earlier). Stone rubble. Consists of a single segmental arch with well-cut voussoirs and raised keystone on both sides. Parapets with copings of roughly-squared blocks of stone. The SE parapet is extended N where the river runs alongside the road. On top of one coping-stone of this parapet is incised the date 1775 and the initials CCS and PS; the inscription is enclosed in ornate brackets in the manner of a cartouche. On the upstream side the river bank has an old cobble surface, presumably intended to guard against erosion.
