Details LOFTUS HIGH STREET NZ 7218 (in middle of road), Loftus. 4/32 Drinking fountain, trough, war memorial, steps and railings, south-east of No. 39 - II Drinking fountain and trough, late c19; war memorial, steps and railings 1922 by W. Arrowsmith and B.J. Wormleighton. Dressed sandstone, steel, smooth Cornish granite war memorial and concrete steps. Crescent-plan retaining wall, with flat copings, ramped up to central semicircular-headed niche with vermiculate rusticated voussoirs. Iron lion-mask water spout fixed to mosaic panel in niche above segmental-plan trough. Metal lettering applied to wall above niche: "THESE LAID THE WORLD AWAY POURED OUT THE RED SWEET WINE OF YOUTH GAVE UP THE YEARS TO BE OF WORK AND JOY AND THAT UNHOPED SERENE THAT MEN CALL AGE". Railings, with stick balusters and metal wreath ornaments, on crescent wall and walls flanking the curved stairs leading up to memorial. Celtic cross on tapered shaft with chamfered square base and plinth. Metal wreath at base of south face of shaft. Metal plates bear names of fallen in 1914-18 war and in 1939-45 war. Names of designer and patron in metal lettering on base. Fountain disused at time of survey.
