Details A First World War memorial, erected in 1926. MATERIALS Portland stone. DESCRIPTION The memorial, which stands circa 4.5m high, takes the form of a cross of sacrifice, the cross and octagonal shaft with a relief carved inverted sword, on a moulded foot. The foot stands on an octagonal plinth, which is set on a platform of three narrow stone steps. The plinth is inscribed on three sides, in a Serif font. The front face reads ERECTED / BY THE / VILLAGERS OF WOOLVERTON / TO THE SACRED MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918. The right face is inscribed with the details of the soldier from the village who died in the war: WALTER HAINE / 11TH. BN. K.R.R.C. / FRANCE / 1916. The left face carries the inscription THESE MEN OF OURS / UNSELFISH, UNAFRAID / WENT TO THE WORLDWIDE FIGHT / FORGET NOT HOW THEY FOUGHT / AND HOW WE PRAYED / FOR ENGLAND AND FOR RIGHT / HENRY NEWBOLT.
