Category B Date Added 22/02/1972 Local Authority Aberdeenshire Planning Authority Aberdeenshire Parish Gamrie NGR NJ 72107 61106 Coordinates 372107, 861106 — Early-mid 19th century. Tall square rubble, slightly battered base surmounted by rubble tapering cylindrical windmill tower, also slightly battered. Tooled ashlar wallhead copes. Long, narrow round-headed arched opening in centre of N elevation similar blocked opening formerly gave access to wallhead of square base. Iron ring and bolt at base of tower at N, E and W (possibly also at S but not immediately visible). INTERIOR: gutted. — Farm steading, of which the windmill is the centre piece, now gutted and not included in listing. Similar windmill incorporated in farm steading appears in J C Lundon's ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF COTTAGE, FARM AND VILLA, ARCHITECTURE (1846, pp.471-3. Montbletton farm formerly part of the Earl of Fife's estates in Banffshire. It is said that other farmers in the neighbourhood requested windmills on their farms, to be told by the factor that 'there was nae wind enough' for more! Iron rings at base of tower used for securing windmill sails.
