Details SE 82 SW SE 8213 2320 1/37 TWIN RIVERS MAIN STREET (north side, off) Whitgift Lighthouse on bank of River Ouse GV II Lighthouse. Probably late C19, for Aire and Calder Navigation. Concrete base with ashlar cornice; timber- or metal-framed tower with covering of felted vertical wooden boards, iron railings and balcony with timber decking; sheet metal dome. Circular on plan. Five-storey height. Three stages. Rusticated cylindrical bottom stage has plinth, steps to north entrance with recessed panelled door in chamfered architrave, plain board door to south, moulded ashlar cornice. Tapered tower above with sets of three small stairlights to south and west sides. Plain brackets supporting balcony with plain railings. Top stage with wide two-light window to north side beneath cornice and ribbed dome with small cylindrical ventilator with conical cap. Interior not inspected. A local landmark, and the only lighthouse on the Ouse-Trent-Humber river system upstream of the estuary mouth.
