Details SUNDERLAND NZ4152NW THE GREEN, Ryhope 920-1/23/266 (West side) War Memorial at west end GV II War memorial to Great War and WWII. c1920. Ashlar and bronze. Octagonal stepped base to high panelled, corniced plinth and tall, tapered, chamfered cross with low relief cross and leaves. Long inscription on E face of base made up of indiviual bronze letters, some removed; plaque on N to an airman (posthumous VC) who avoided Ryhope when crash landing; large letters on W face of base PRO PATRIA GREAT WAR 1914-1918; 8 panels on plinth each have about 50 names from WWI. Listing NGR: NZ4123852906 This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 24 July 2017.
