Details 1495/0/10028 STANHOPE DRIVE 31-AUG-07 WAR MEMORIAL II War Memorial, erected 1929, manufactured by James Hird Thompson, in stone. An irregularly shaped monolith of grey stone, c.2 metres high, set in an area of paving raised on a low brick platform, with two steps to the front and angled raised flower beds in brick to either side. The front face bears a bronze plaque reading THIS AVENUE IS PLANTED/IN COMMEMORATION OF THE/ 211 MAN AND WOMEN FROM HORSFORTH/ WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918./"WE LIE DEAD IN MANY LANDS/THAT YOU MAY LIVE HERE IN PEACE" The memorial stone is at the centre of an avenue of trees planted along the side of the road (Stanhope Drive), originally with a name plaque on each tree. These plaques are now lost but the trees remain, forming part of the war memorial. The memorial was unveiled by the Countess of Harewood in 1929. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: The Horsforth War Memorial is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * An eloquent witness to the impact of world events on a local community * Its strong physical presence reflects an awareness of the loss of life from the war This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register.
