Details TQ405 SW THE GREEN 1145/8/10006 Southwick 12-OCT-00 War Memorial II War memorial. 1922, designed by local Harbour Master Councillor A Catt. Mainly built of concrete aggregate blocks resembling rusticated stone with some slabs of broken concrete taken from a military camp housing Royal Marine Engineers on Southwick Green but also some granite and bronze decoration. Comprises tapering concrete obelisk about 15 feet in height with moulded granite pyramidal cap, cornice and plinth. South front has has bronze wreath fixed to obelisk and bronze plaque to plinth with the inscription "This memorial was erected to the memory of the men of Southwick and Fishersgate who fell in the Great War 1914-1919. Let those for whom they died see they be not forgotten." A further panel below reads "1939-1945." Other sides have stone inscription panels with the names of the fallen. The obelisk is set on two octagonal broken concrete steps on oval broken concrete base with concrete aggregate balustrading incorporating eight piers, two flights of four stone steps and end elliptical-shaped flower beds with cast iron railings.
