Category A Date Added 14/05/1971 Local Authority West Dunbartonshire Planning Authority West Dunbartonshire Parish Cardross NGR NS 38810 78200 Coordinates 238810, 678200 — Erected 1774. Ashlar Tuscan column on 60? tall square pedestal base capped by urn finial on domed pedestal base. Large marble inset at centre of base; long Latin inscription. — The column was erected in memory of Tobias Smollett, physician and novelist, by his cousin Jane Smollett. The Latin inscription is by Professor George Stuart of Edinburgh, John Ramsay of Ochtertyre and Dr Samuel Johnson.
