Made of granite, it takes the form of a square cut, roughly hewn cross with tall shaft and short arms. It stands on a stone plinth, cut to retain the appearance of natural rock, the front face of which is smooth and bears the inscription. This reads "To the memory of the men of Selmeston and Alciston who fell in the Great War 1914 -1918", followed by fifteen names. It stands at a road junction on the edge of the village of Selmeston, in sight of two listed buildings. SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE War memorials qualify for listing because of their historical and cultural significance at a local and national level. The design of this cross is exceptionally simple and a powerful memorial to those who died in the First World War.
