Date Added 24/02/2021 Type Secular: bridge Local Authority Scottish Borders Planning Authority Scottish Borders Parish Ancrum NGR NT 63871 23750 Coordinates 363871, 623750 — The monument comprises the remains of a medieval bridge which crossed the River Teviot. It survives as two pier bases or foundations submerged in the River Teviot beneath the northern and central arches of a later bridge (1784). The northern pier base comprises two kerbstones and two pieces of timber. The southern base is more complete, with numerous kerbstones and timbers visible. The bridge would have had multiple spans and three other piers bases may survive beneath, or close to, the footings of the 18th century bridge. The scheduled area is rectangular. It includes the remains described above and an area around within which evidence relating to the monument s construction, use and abandonment is expected to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map. The above ground elements of Ancrum Old Bridge are specifically excluded from the scheduled area.
