Details A parish war memorial, unveiled in May 1924 and designed by the rector of St Maurice, Revd. CE Seccombe. MATERIALS and PLAN: of grey, Cornish granite, the monument takes the form of an obelisk on a plinth which rises above a platform of two steps. The monument is placed to the north-west of the parish church of St Maurice (Grade II*) and to the north of the motte of the ruined Plympton Castle (Grade II*). The obelisk is formed of three blocks of granite with a cross in relief to the top of the east and west fronts and laurel wreaths to the north and south fronts. The east front bears an inscription in inset lead lettering, which reads: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / PLYMPTON ST. MAURICE. / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / FOR FREEDOM AND JUSTICE, / 1914 – 1918. / “THEY SHALL BE HAD IN EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE.”. On the west front is inscribed: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / PLYMPTON ST MAURICE / WHO DIED FOR THEIR FELLOW-MEN IN THE WAR. / 1939 – 1945. / “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS.” This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register.
