Details SCARCROFT THORNER LANE SE34SE LS14 (south side, off) 7/165 Oaklands Manor GV II Large villa, now offices. c1844 for Ard Walker Jnr. Ashlar, Westmorland green-slate roof. Double-depth. 2 storeys with cellars and attics. 3-bay symmetrical facade. Plinth. Each bay and corners articulated by giant pilasters. Ground floor has channelled rustication below 1st-floor band. Doorway with architrave, double-doors and overlight flanked by long narrow lights approached up flight of 5 stone steps with flanking drums with urns. Tuscan porch with fluted columns. Window above has architrave and consoles. Flanking bays have 15-pane sashes with 12-pane sashes above. Frieze, deep projecting eaves cornice, blocking course, central triangular pediment. Hipped roof with 4 ashlar stacks (not visible)around a central well. Rear U-shaped with projecting wings flanking central entrance with single Tuscan column supporting porch built out of left wing. Above, tripartite sash window with simple pilaster mullions. Wing to left has gable stack; that to right taller with hipped roof. Right-hand return: 3 symmetrical bays. Central bay projects slightly and has sash window to each floor. Flanking bays on ground floor have projecting semicircular bow windows each with 3 windows separated by pilasters, the central window approached by flight of 5 steps, that to left a French-window. Sash windows above. Interior: entrance hall has open-well, open-string stair with wreathed-and-ramped handrail. In front of it is distyle in antis Corinthian screen. Rich ceiling cornice with panelled ceiling. Doors either side leading to front rooms have carved architraves, consoles and cornices and original 4-panel doors.
