Category B Date Added 30/06/1983 Local Authority Midlothian Planning Authority Midlothian Burgh Dalkeith NGR NT 33626 67073 Coordinates 333626, 667073 — 1756, reconstructed by James Jardine, 1839. Road bridge, on E-W axis. 3-span with segmental arches. Side arches blinded with recessed rubble masonry. Rubble. Channelled bull-faced piers with channelled ashlar pilasters from impost to parapet. Ashlar voussoirs, intrados and parapet. Panel above central arch to N and S; inscription to N panel, including "James Jardine, Engineer. James Lees, Builder. MDCCCXXXIX". Band of iron hooks on parapets. — Newmills Bridge carries Newmills Road (A68) over River South Esk. A bridge was built in 1756, and was widened and repaired in 1812. Three new arches were thrown over it, with half the breadth being covered in 1837, and the other half in 1839.
