Category B Date Added 22/01/1971 Local Authority Scottish Borders Planning Authority Scottish Borders Parish Stow NGR NT 45006 43293 Coordinates 345006, 643293 — Circa 1790. Finely proportioned road bridge with 3 segmental arches (highest to centre). Rubble with dressed pink sandstone voussoirs. Abutments curved out at embankment to both sides and continuing as extended wall with cylindrical piers to S end. Flat-coped parapet rising to shallow pitch at centre. Rounded cut-waters. — Luggate Bridge is a handsome and substantial late 18th century road bridge located on a broadly sweeping section of the old coach road to the W of Gala Water, 1 mile SW of Stow. It is notable for its solid massing with rounded abutments and cut-waters and long, shallow pitched parapet. Described in the New Statistical Account as "a very good and commodious bridge, built by the County of Edinburgh over Lugate Water". List description updated at resurvey (2009).
