The community includes the villages of Gaerwen and Pentre Berw; it also includes the Malltraeth Marsh RSPB. The percentage of Welsh language speakers in the community in 2011 was 76.5%. Coal was mined in the area from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The old parish church of St Michael, less than a mile from Gaerwen, now lies in ruins. It was replaced by the new church of St Michael in Gaerwen, in 1847.
