Details SE23NW LS13 LEEDS AND SE2236 PUDSEY LIVERPOOL CANAL, Calverley Bridge 2/95 Owl Bridge (No 216) (formerly listed as 25.1.78 Owl Bridge over Leeds and Liverpool Canal) GV II Swing-bridge. Late C18 by James Brindley and Richard Whitworth (engineers). Dressed-stone abutments of large blocks. The canal narrows like a bottle-neck, the east side taller with tapering sides and stepped to house pivoting end of bridge. The west side with a quadrant-shaped recess for bridge to swing round into. Modern cast-iron bridge with boarded floor on riveted pivot. The Act for the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was passed in 1770.
