Category B Date Added 14/04/1971 Local Authority North Ayrshire Planning Authority North Ayrshire Parish Kilbirnie NGR NS 32305 57915 Coordinates 232305, 657915 — Circa 1609. Ruined castle, of which only the east corner of the north wall survives above ground level. Its height, dressed quoins, an elliptical gun port, a rectangular window opening and a rubble pile on its south side distinguish it from the garden wall. Incorporated with rubble-built garden walls, around rectangular enclosure, probably built or rebuilt in 1817. Entered from the south, immediately to west of castle, by a segmental-arched gateway with wrought-iron gates. 3 carved stones above; central rectangular with acroterion pediment and apex urn is inscribed "WC, CH" and dated 1817; flanking pediment shaped stones have ball finials; and were probably removed from the castle. Stone to left is inscribed "WH, IB, Anno 1669"; that to right is patterned with triangular and circular motifs. Central gateway and some square beehive recesses in north wall. — NSA suggests 1661 as possibly the date of alterations or <> acquisition of estate by Hamilton of Ardoch.
