Details IRON BRIDGE 1. 1092 Iron Bridge SX 9192 NE 2/226 29.1.53 II GV 2. Constructed 1834. Cast-iron shafted piers support joists from which spring the six rows of arched girders on which the road is carried. Quatrefoil piercings to the outer rows of girders. At road level there are cast iron balustrades of Gothic design, incorporating lamp standards. Designed and made by Russell and Brown of Worcester. The world’s first iron bridge was erected over the River Severn here in 1779 by Abraham Darby III. Costing over £6000, the bridge was cast in his Coalbrookdale foundry, using 378 tons of iron.
