Erected by the Officers and men "In memory of those killed in a gun accident on board H.M.S. Sovereign off Platea, November 9th 1901, whilst discharging their duty"... also to the memory of those who died during The Commission". Inscriptions list those who were killed and those who died during the commission 1899-1902. (Berridge DW: Monuments and Memorials in the City of Portsmouth: 1984-: 20).
