Background

History

Hethel's name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and derives from the Old English for heather hill. In the Domesday Book, Hethel is listed as a settlement of 21 households in the hundred of Humbleyard. In 1086, the village was divided between the estates of Roger Bigod and Judicael the Priest. Hethel Hall was built in the Seventeenth Century and was demolished in the 1950s. On 1 April 1935, the parish was abolished and merged with Bracon Ash.
