Details First World War memorial, 1920, with Second World War additions. It was designed by William Douglas Caröe FSA (1857-1938) and built by Messrs Clary and Wright. MATERIAL: Clipsham stone. DESCRIPTION: Henstead with Hulver Street War Memorial stands in the village cemetery in the small hamlet of Henstead, on the south side of Church Road, directly opposite the south porch of the Church of St Mary (listed Grade I). The memorial comprises a tall, plain Latin cross with a square base standing on a deep, square plinth with incised inscription panels, the whole standing on a two-stepped base. The main inscription is in incised lettering on the north face of the cross base and plinth and reads: THE / GREAT / WAR / HENSTEAD AND HULVER / ROLL OF HONOUR / THOSE WHO MADE THE / SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR / KING AND COUNTRY / RIP. The south, west and east faces record the names of the fallen. A rectangular stone tablet fixed to the north side of the stepped base bears the Second World War dedication and reads: SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945 / [Names].
