Details NY 14 SW HAYTON & MEALO HAYTON 7/63 Hayton Castle 11.4.67 G.V. I Castle now house. C14 or C15 tower, with C16 and C17 additions for the Musgrave family. Large blocks of dressed red sandstone, with stone parapet, on chamfered plinth. Graduated greenslate roof with sandstone chimney stacks. 2 storeys with attic, 8 bays of double span. Core of tower to rear with flanking C16 extensions in an L-shape; the angle of the L infilled in C17 to form large rectangular building. C19 top-glazed panelled door in late C17 bolection architrave under segmental pediment containing carved heads and urn with shaped finials. Left bays have C16 double-chamfered cross-mullioned windows with glazing bars under hoodmoulds, and smaller 3-light attic windows. Right bays have sash windows in late C17 architraves. Left return has plank door within C20 wooden porch, this and the windows in C16 surrounds under hoodmoulds; some windows have cross mullions and glazing bars. Right return has sash windows in late C17 architraves. Rear of 4 gables,the oldest part supported by 2 large wedge-shaped buttresses. C15-C17 windows at different levels, some under hoodmoulds. Coat-of-arms on left side wall and internal armorial panel on stairs dated 1609 and both to Musgrave family. Thick internal walls containing many medieval and C16 features fully described and planned in Transactions of Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society, new series, xiii, pp.234-243. History
Hayton Castle is the centre of a small manor within the baronetcy of Allerdale, whose families have featured prominently in the history of Cumberland. The manor of Hayton was originally granted by Alan, second Lord of Allerdale, to his huntsman Seliff, whose descendants in consequence assumed the name De Hayton. It was from this marriage of Margaret Colville and Nicholas Musgrave (1450–1506), fourth son of Sir Thomas, that sprang the line through which the manor was handed down for fourteen generations, lasting about 300 years. He was succeeded by Thomas Musgrave, Marshal of Berwick (1483–1532). His son William Musgrave, MP, of Hayton (1518–1597) inherited the estate. He was succeeded by…
Description
One should assume that no building of any great importance existed at Hayton before the rise of the Mulcaster family. Sir Piers de Tilliol apparently preferred to live at Scaleby and as such left no mark at Hayton, leaving most of the building and alterations which gave the castle its present-day appearance to the Musgrave family. Today the building is a rectangle measuring about 29 metres from North to South and 16 metres from East to West. The north end is the best preserved, and most of the extensive alterations have been carried out at the south end.
