Details NZ 15 NW CONSETT B 6310 (South side) Hamsterley 1/22 "Handley Cross."Bridge 6/6/51 GV II Bridge over Hamsterley Burn. Possibly 1825 by John Dobson; for R.S. Surtees, and called after his successful novel of 1843. Carries drive to house over deep cut. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings. Gothic style. High 2-centred arch over burn is flanked by 2 smaller similar arches, the impost band of the larger forming sill bands at each side. Road-bed-level band below parapet, which has thin flat coping and ends in low square piers with pulvinated corner blocks below wide bands and roughly-cut high square copings.
