Details A war memorial cross of 1920 date. MATERIALS: of coarsely dressed stone. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is a cross on a square base and sloping square plinth with recessed panels to each face. The tapering square shaft is surmounted by a square wheel cross. The front (S) face of the plinth reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE/ EIGHT PARISHIONERS WHO/ FELL, AND OF THE FORTY FIVE/ WHO, FROM THIS PARISH,/ SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919. The base below is inscribed THIS CROSS IS THE GIFT OF THE PEOPLE/ OF COMBE FLOREY, 1920. The E face of the plinth is inscribed with names of the fallen and their place and date of death. The N face reads “IF OUR TIME BE COME, LET/ US DIE MANFULLY FOR OUR/ BRETHREN AND LET US NOT/ STAIN OUR HONOUR./ MACC. IX.10/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES).
