Category B Date Added 16/03/1971 Local Authority Scottish Borders Planning Authority Scottish Borders Parish Earlston NGR NT 56212 39770 Coordinates 356212, 639770 — Style of Alexander Stevens or William Elliot, late 18th century. Circa 40ft single span, picturesque bridge spanning Leader Water, linking Carolside and Leadervale estates. Predominantly harl pointed sandstone rubble; render repairs in part; sandstone ashlar dressings. Regularly spaced raised ashlar voussoirs beneath continuous round arched bands; prominent corbels beneath surmounting parapets (balustraded at centre). Approach walls stepped out to N and S; circular-plan terminating piers with circular caps. Mid to late 19th century iron gatepiers and gate to N. — Compare the raised voussoirs at Old Ancrum Bridge (1782, Elliot or Stevens) and the terminal piers at Mouth Bridge (possibly Stevens, circa 1790). Originally formed part of the main approach to Carolside House - itself dating from the late 18th century (see separate list entry). The remains of a single storey, rubble-built, 17th century Gothick structure still stand to the NW of the bridge.
