Details BURY ST EDMUNDS TL8564SW CORNHILL 639-1/7/291 Boer War Memorial GV II Memorial to the 193 Suffolk men who died in the Boer War. 1904. By AG Walker. Stone. On an island site in the centre of Cornhill. The monument stands on a low raised platform paved with stone setts and surrounded by iron railings with low square vase-shaped stone posts. It takes the form of a stone rectangular table tomb with small moulded pillars recessed at the angles and egg-and-dart ornament round the top. Each face is panelled, the panels on the south, east and west with the names of those killed, that on the north with the words VULNERATUS NON VICTUS above the arms of West Suffolk, and an inscription below which reads: THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY SUFFOLK PEOPLE AS A MEMORIAL TO SUFFOLK SOLDIERS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899-1902. On the coffin lid a bare-headed soldier is seated in a defensive attitude, grasping a rifle, with his fallen helmet lying on the rocks below.
