Category B Date Added 12/01/1967 Local Authority Aberdeen Planning Authority Aberdeen Burgh Aberdeen NGR NJ 93947 06022 Coordinates 393947, 806022 — John Willet 1865-7. Series of arches of diminishing height from Union Street to Guild Street. Arch exposed at Windmill Brae, brick with stone spandrels c.i. parapet. — These engineering works form the skeleton round which the present city centre has evolved. They are bold and imaginative examples of town planning in early times and of considerable historic interest on this account and by reason of the extensive use of the modern flyover principle; that at Marischal Street is of especial importance anticipating Edinburgh South Bridge by nineteen years. Within Aberdeen Art Gallery unexecuted plans for Union Bridge by Sir John Rennie, David Hamilton of Glasgow and James Young of London (1800) Telford had proposed 150' span (drawing dated 3rd February 1802) Line of street suggested by Abercrombie in report of 30th April 1796. Carried out under Act of Parliament of 1800.
