Details LEEDS SE33SE TEMPLE NEWSAM PARK, Temple Newsam 714-1/12/1122 Bridge over Avenue Ponds 05/08/76 GV II Bridge. 1714. By William Etty of York. Coursed stone string course, ashlar parapet with plain stone coping and large square piers at ends with heavy moulded caps. Situated where the East Avenue crosses Avenue Ponds, in the form of a dam wall with sluice at centre which is elliptically-arched on S side. Parapet on S side has collapsed but end piers survive, the capstone is missing from the NW and SE piers. The present East Avenue, bridge and ponds were started under the direction of William Etty and took 5 years to complete. The scheme reflects an early phase of the new taste for the natural beauty of landscape which led to the open pastoral style of Capability Brown who was commissioned to prepare plans for improvements in 1762. The mouldings are similar to those at Castle Howard. (Leeds City Art Galleries: Guide to Temple Newsam: 1989-: 32).
