Heritage listing

Date Added 04/03/2002 Type Secular: bridge Local Authority Aberdeenshire Parish Strathdon NGR NJ 27164 07561 Coordinates 327164, 807561 — The monument comprises the remains of a small mid-18th century bridge, on the line of the Old Military Road connecting Coupar Angus to Fort George. The road was built to connect Perth and Dundee with the, then, newly built Fort George. Construction of the road began in 1748 under the aegis of Major Caulfield, with the section in question, Braemar to Corgarff, started in 1753. This section includes the impressive five-arched Invercauld Bridge, but the small single-arched bridge over the Allt Damh Burn is much more typical of bridge building associated with the military roads. The bridge is in a ruinous condition, with only the N half of the single arch surviving. The arch has a span of 6.1m and the bridge stands 2.4m high. The level of the approach is much higher to the SE, where the roadway rises up a grass-covered ramp to cross the bridge. The original roadway was about 3.3m wide. The area to be scheduled is rectangular in shape to include the bridge and an area around it in which traces of activities associated with the construction and use of the monument may survive. The area has maximum dimensions of 12m NW-SE by 2.75m transversely, as marked in red on the attached map. The roadway, which is still used as an estate road, now bypasses the bridge.
