Details BARNACK 987/0/10034 War Memorial 17-JUN-09 II MATERIALS: Clipsham Stone and bronze PLAN: Stepped, square base plinth surmounted by a cross, octagonal in plan with tapered shaft. The main inscription reads "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD AND IN/ MEMORYOF/ THE BARNACK/ MEN WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT/ WAR1914-1919/JESU MERCY/ (NAMES)/ 1939-1945/ (NAMES)/ THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY ALFRED WEBSTER" HISTORY: The war memorial was donated by Alfred Webster who lived in Barnack before emigrating to South Africa in the early 1900's. It was formally dedicated by the Archdeacon of Oakham at a ceremony on 6th February 1921. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: The war memorial at Barnack is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons: * It is a poignant reminder of nationally and internationally significant events. * A good example of a relatively simple but architecturally distinct tribute to the fallen of two world wars and the Falklands conflict.
