Category A Date Added 22/02/1972 Supplementary Information Updated 15/03/1995 Local Authority Aberdeenshire Planning Authority Aberdeenshire Burgh Banff NGR NJ 69473 63779 Coordinates 369473, 863779 — John Smeaton, engineer, 1779; widened in 1881, John Willet, engineer. 7-span bridge; tooled rubble, ashlar dressings. Dressed stone arched rings and rubble spandrels with oculi; the original arches have smaller radius than those added during widening, both are segmental and those of l881 lined with brick. Coped parapet with later lamp standards; cutwaters rising to link with l881 spandrels. Approximate span of arches: outer arches slightly narrower than those in centre, varying in width from approximately 16 metres to approximately 19 metres. — Replaced former bridge, a little further down stream swept away in 1768. The Smeaton bridge is well illustrated in John Clerk's print of Banff, 1825.
