Details THIRKLEBY HIGH AND LOW BACK LANE SE 47 NE WITH OSGODBY 4/60 Arden Bridge over Thirkleby Beck - II Road bridge. Late C18. Probably by John Carr. Coursed squared stone. Single segmental arch flanked by pilaster buttresses with band continued across buttresses and chamfered coping to parapet which rises above arch. The north-east buttress is at an angle to the bridge in line with the wing wall which is renewed above the band and ends in a pair in same style as buttresses. Other wing walls have been rebuilt C20, with bands, coping, and end piers, that at south-west angle C18. Carr's design for 'Thirkleby North' bridge, built 1799 (Carr's Bridge Book), appears to be of this bridge although it has been associated with another, now rebuilt, on the route of the Al9 (Utley, p 162). Even if the drawing is not of this bridge it follows Carr's style and is almost certainly his design. Carr's Bridge Book, North Yorkshire County Archives.
