Heritage listing
Details The war memorial is sited in the churchyard of St Edmund’s church (Grade II*), Allestree, and is set back slightly beside the path from the lychgate to the church door. It is carved mainly from Aberdeen granite and takes the form of a Celtic cross, with the interlaced decoration on the west face of the cross only. The shaft and battered plinth on which it stands are of rough-hewn granite. The 16 names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on two panels on the west face of the plinth, and a stone slab at the base of the plinth bears the names of those who died in the Second World War. Inscribed on the base of the cross shaft in black lettering, are the words THE GLORIOUS DEAD, below which, carved in relief, are the dates of the First World War, 1914 and 1919.
