Category C Date Added 04/05/2000 Local Authority Argyll And Bute Planning Authority Argyll And Bute Parish Kilbrandon And Kilchattan NGR NM 74287 10033 Coordinates 174287, 710033 — Earlier to mid 19th century with later additions and alterations. Single storey with attic, rectangular-plan former corn mill built into hillside with wheel in place to NE; roofless addition at rear forming near L-plan; remains of wall to N. Predominantly whinstone rubble (harled in part); rubble sandstone quoins in part to later wing. SE (FRONT) ELEVATION: ground floor built into hillside. Square-headed, catslide opening breaking eaves off-set to left of centre. NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end to left with all-iron overshot wheel in place at ground (16ft diameter); small, square opening centred in gablehead. Remains of rubble wall adjoined to outer right. NW (REAR) ELEVATION: blind elevation to roofless projection to outer right. Square-headed opening in bay recessed to left; remains of rubble wall projecting to outer left. SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end to right with arched entrance formed in part-blocked, square-headed opening centred at ground; small, rectangular opening off-set to right above. Square-headed opening in roofless addition to outer left. Glazing missing. Corrugated-iron roof to principal block (missing in part). INTERIOR: principal block with rubble walls; open timber ceiling with tie beams. Milling machinery in place to NE comprising timber-framed support with 2 pairs of stones (50in diameter), various cogs and wheels. Remains of metal roof supports in later addition. — In use as a cow shed 1999. A good example of a relatively rare building type, notable for the retention of its all-iron overshot wheel and the milling machinery. Hume notes that the construction of the wheel
