Saxon churches of Anglo-Saxon England

Ten rare survivors of pre-Norman architecture.

Fewer than 50 churches in England retain substantial Anglo-Saxon fabric — most were rebuilt by Norman or later masons. The ten in this guide are picked for the completeness of their Saxon work: Escomb in Co. Durham (almost entirely 7th century), Earls Barton with its tower-pilaster strips, Wing in Buckinghamshire with its 9th-century apse, Greensted with its wooden walls (the oldest wooden church in Europe). All remain in active parish use.
