Trinity House and the Northern Lighthouse Board have automated nearly all UK lighthouses, leaving the keeper cottages either decommissioned or converted to holiday rentals. The Rural Cottages programme and the National Trust manage around forty of them — some on remote tidal islands, some at the foot of cliffs. We've picked ten with the strongest combination of remoteness and bookable comfort.
