Heritage listing

Details A simple cross, probably local Cary stone, with a tapering, chamfered shaft set upon a square plinth, which in turn stands on an octagonal stone base of three steps. There is a carved relief of a laurel wreath containing the dates 1914 /1918 to the front (south) face of the plinth and a sword in relief on the upper part of the shaft. The inscription on the south face reads: 'IN GRATITUDE TO THE MEN OF / YARLINGTON WHO GAVE THEIR SERVICES / FOR KING AND COUNTRY BEYOND THE / SEAS IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918'. A stone plaque on the east face is inscribed: 'IF HIS DUST ONE DAY IS LYING/ IN AN UNFAMILIAR LAND / ENGLAND HE WENT FOR YOU / ENGLAND; THINK OF HIM AS ONE OF THE THOUSANDS / IN THE NOONTIDE AND THE EVEN / AS ONCE HE THOUGHT OF YOU'. On the west side of the memorial the plinth bears the names of two local men who lost their lives in the Great War, while a later plaque on the uppermost step of the base, also to the west face, is inscribed with the name of the local man who died during the Second World War.
