Details 184/0/10029 EAST WOODHAY Woolton Hill CHURCH STREET War Memorial 06-FEB-08 GV II War memorial, presumably 1920s, designer unknown. DESCRIPTION: the Woolton Hill War Memorial stands outside the churchyard of St Thomas' Church (Grade II) to the north-east of the Lych Gate. It comprises a tapering octagonal stone shaft moulded at the base. This stands on an inscribed stone plinth of octagonal plan, two high steps above two low steps. The inscription reads: In Thankful memory of the men/ of Woolton Hill, who gave their lives/ in the Great War 1914-1919/ (names)/ and those who fell/ in the World War 1939-1945/ (names). Attached to the centre of the cross is carved stone wreath. The war memorial is bordered to the south-east by wood and iron railings on a brick base. The wood and chain link fence to the north-east is not of special interest. HISTORY: the date of erection is not known but is presumed early 1920s given its primary function as a memorial to the fallen of the First World War.
