Category C Date Added 27/09/2004 Local Authority Orkney Islands Planning Authority Orkney Islands Parish Cross And Burness NGR HY 75795 53721 Coordinates 375795, 1053721 — War memorial erected circa 1920 in memory of the North Ronaldsay men who lost their lives to the First World War. Tall Celtic cross of polished granite on stepped plinths engraved with the names of the men who died in both the First and Second World Wars. The cross shaft and face is decorated with carved Celtic design. Low rubble wall with coping stands to rear (S) of memorial framing the apex of the triangular-shaped ground upon which the monument stands. Low bollards with chains attached enclose the site. The positioning of the memorial is significant; it sits in the centre of the island at the junction of roads and at the apex of a triangular-shaped field. Presumably the choice of memorial was also of significance as the tall cross standing proud against the low-lying landscape. — The erection of the memorial was supervised by 2 veterans of the War, John Tulloch of Upper Linnay who served at sea and whose brother died in 1918, and by Peter Swanney of North Gravity who fought in the trenches in France. Both were masons and were responsible for building the back wall of the memorial.
