Details First World War memorial. Erected c1920. MATERIALS: carved from sandstone. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands in the churchyard of St Mark’s Church. It is immediately south-west of the church tower. The memorial comprises a crucifix set upon a cornice and the capital of a Tuscan column with a moulded base, together c.4m high. To each side of the crucifix is a statue of St Mary and St John. At the centre of the cross is a carved scroll bearing the letters: IN/ RI; Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews). The column rests upon a square plinth 0.7m high and two-tiered square base 1m high. Encircling the plinth is the following inscription, anti-clockwise from SW: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. Beneath it are inscribed 118 names of those that lost their lives. On the top tier of the base is the inscription: THE LORD SHALL GIVE HIS PEOPLE/ THE BLESSING OF PEACE.
