Details SE 2860-2960 8/106 15.3.66 RIPLEY RIPLEY PARK Tower and flanking walls approximately 300 metres south-west of Ripley Castle (formerly listed as Tower at end of Ripley Castle garden wall) GV II Tower and flanking garden walls. Tower possibly C16, the flanking walls and tower parapet probably early-mid C19. Later work probably for Sir William Amcott Ingilby. Tower:of coursed pink/grey gritstone rubble; roofless and floorless at time of resurvey. Approximately 4 metres square, of 2 or 3 storeys, the lower storey below the present ground level and with a narrow pointed-arched opening on the north-east side. The crenellated parapet with roll moulded eaves band, and upper walling possibly rebuilt or additional. Flanking walls of coursed squared gritstone, approximately 400 metres long, 2.5 metres high with flat coping stones to the battlemented parapet. The walling links the Tower Bridge(qv) with the gatehouse (qv) and was probably constructed when the lake was made at Ripley in 1843-44. The damming of the lake involved the raising of the ground surface around the tower and probably the demolition of earlier walling between tower and gatehouse. The tower was used as an eel store.
