Category B Date Added 03/08/1971 Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Planning Authority Dumfries And Galloway Parish Tinwald NGR NY 00249 81636 Coordinates 300249, 581636 — Dated 1765 on east gable. Plain, rectangular-plan, 4-bay church, alterations and additions James Barbour of Dumfries, 1898-9, with gabled porch added to east gable, lean-to vestry at west end of north wall, original door on wet gable now a tall lancet, windows to bays now pointed-headed bipartites. Squared red rubble, with ashlar dressings. 2 shouldered doors to porch; bipartite to west wall of vestry; ball-finialed, plain, birdcage bellcote over west gable (17th century Dutch bell); ball finial over east gable; central axial ventilator; main eaves cornice; wall-head stack above vestry; slate roofs. Interior also by Barbour: hammer beam roof; pointed alcoves on west gable flanking lancet 4 leaded windows by Gordon Webster inserted between 1937-1978. Irregular-plan churchyard is mostly enclosed by rubble-built walls; square, red ashlar gatepiers at south west. Many interesting 17-19th century stone monuments, Charteris enclosure against north wall of church. — Ecclesiastical building in use as such. The RCAHM INVENTORY 1920 notes the monument to John Corbet, covenantor, and a 1618 carved stone in the Charteris enclosure. (no. 586)
