The school first opened on 20 June 1958 with an original enrolment of 400 pupils. It received Arts College status in September 2004 with the opening of a new studio called The Studio @ TPS. Planning permission for the new development was granted on 5 June 2008. Permission was also later given to remove an ancient oak tree as part of the development, and consent was made by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills for the sale of school land to Tesco. The AstroTurf pitch was completed in March 2010, with the expectation that all the new facilities were to be complete and open for use by September 2010.
