Heritage listing
Date Added 19/02/1987 Type Ecclesiastical: burial ground, cemetery, graveyard; church, Prehistoric domestic and defensive: settlement (if not assigned to any more specific type) Local Authority Scottish Borders Parish Coldstream NGR NT 82997 40576 Coordinates 382997, 640576 — The monument comprises a church and its cemetery founded probably in the 9th century AD and continuing in use into the early 17th century. There is also clear evidence of domestic occupation in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, in the Medieval period, and possibly in the early Roman period. The area proposed for scheduling clearly contains settlement of the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Medieval periods, and possibly some of the early Roman period. The ecclesiastical part of the site provides a unique example of the development and demise of a proprietory church and its cemetery through at least 800 years.
