Details This list entry was subject to a Minor Amendment on 19/12/2012 TQ 52 SE 3/792D 30.8.66 5208 HEATHFIELD BATTLE ROAD The Gibraltar Tower Heathfield Park II* Originally called Heathfield Tower. Ornamental tower of 3 storeys erected by Francis Newbery in 1792-3 to commemorate the successful defence of Gibraltar by General Lord Heathfield from 1779 to 1782. Possibly designed by John Crunden. Ashlar. The ground floor is octagonal and has 8 coved and pointed recesses, of which the heads are now filled with weather-boarding. Cornice above ground floor. The upper portions of the tower are round. The first floor has 4 pointed windows (now filled with weather-boarding), and 4 round recesses containing quatrefoil ornamentation. Stringcourse above first floor. The top storey has 4 round windows (now filled with weather-boarding), and above machicolation, a cornice and blocking course. The interior comprises a circular staircase and 3 rooms originally decorated with views of Gibraltar, since removed.
